A Charitable Organisation in Need of an IT Strategy
A third sector charity contacted GreenBOLD because it felt that its IT was not under control, but had no insight in to why, specifically:
- Departments felt technology was failing them and were very demanding.
- Technology budget was being driven down due to a lack of ownership
- The person assigned as responsible for IT had no background or experience in IT
GreenBOLD was engaged to:
- Help the charity gain an understanding of what was required of its IT
- Help the person responsible for technology to develop a strategy that would work for the whole charity
- Examine and implement methods for reducing IT costs without impacting services
GreenBOLD undertook an initial discovery phase by meeting several times with the person responsible for technology. During those sessions, GreenBOLD gained an understanding of where the technology environment was, what was being demanded of it and what the perception of technology was at all levels.
Throughout a series of meetings, an IT strategy was drawn together. Working under the guidance of GreenBOLD, the person responsible for IT spent time with individual heads of department gaining an understanding of their specific requirements and insight in to their department's strategy. From this information,a Technology strategy that under-pinned departmental objectives was created.
At the same time, GreenBOLD undertook an audit of the technology used within the charity and found a number of areas where cost reductions could be made without impacting the service levels. These were mainly in the area of telecommunications, networking and maintenance costs. However, GreenBOLD also provided a variety of innovative strategies to reduce the future capital cost of technology.
Both the strategy and results of the audit were presented to the board and trustees and accepted. The presented cost-savings enabled the delivery of a number of key strategic projects without any additional funding.
The charity has found the strategic direction and guidance provided by GreenBOLD to be very cost effective and GreenBOLD expect to be engaged on a longer term basis to maintain that strategic direction and guidance. The advantage has clearly been seen and it is viewed as beneficial in the longer term.
